INDUSTRIAL CO-OPERATIVES IN SALEM DISTRICT,

     The Industrial Co-operative societies have been organized with a view to uplift the economic conditions of people living below poverty line.  The first and foremost object for organizing Industrial co-operative society is to protect the interest of the economically weaker sections from the clutches of middlemen, it also plays a vital role in greating employment opportunities for the people living in rural areas.

     In Salem District 16 Industrial Co-operative societies have been organized and functioning in different types of trades as follows:

SAGO SERVE:

A Gift to tapioca Industry:

      Prior to the formation of the SAGOSERVE an Industrial Co-operative Service Society the manufacturers of Starch and Sago in this district faced a lot of problems pertaining to credit and marketing of tapioca products.  Merchants used to offer low prices for their goods and middlemen exploited this situation in the absence of organized marketing and warehousing facilities.

     To  over come  these problems the sago/starch manufacturers formed “The Salem Starch and Sago Manufacturer’s Service Industrial Co-operative Society Limited”   Salem in 1981 under the TamilNadu Co-operative Societies ACt 1961.  This society, popularly known as SAGOSERVE through tout the world, is functioning under the administrative control of Commissioner ate of Industries and Commerce, Government of Tamilnadu.

     After the emergence fo SAGOSERVE on the horizon of tapioca industry, the bargaining power of manufacturers has substantially increased in the field of marketing and the menace of middlemen in this trade has been completely overcome.  Due to sustained efforts of the society, Sago/Starch industry has now become the backbone of Salem District’s Rural Economy, providing employment to mor than 5 lakh persons both in field as well as factories.

II.  WAFER SERVE

      The another important trade flourishing in Industrial Co-operative is sago papad            manufacturing society.  Its products are marketed through Northern parts of India as consumable product during the festive seasons such as Ramzan and Holly.

COIR TRADE

1. Salem Central Coir Marketing Industrial Co-operative Society

     Salem is main marketing centre for Coir Products.  In order to facilitate the people engaged in Coir trade to find out suitable market avenue Coir Societies are organised under Co-operative field.  The Salem Central Coir Marketing Industrial Co-operative society is one such institution organised in the year 06.07.1963 with an object to provide trading and marketing assistance to primary Coir Co-operative societies and individuals engaged in coir manufacturing.  It is also established market potentials in Northern parts of India i.e. Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Hariyana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh etc.  The annual turnover is more than 2.00 crores.

  Industrial Co-operative Estate

     Industrial Co-operative Estate has been established at Udayapatty, Salem wigh the objective to bring the Small Scale and Tiny Industries to work under one roof and is provided with all infrastructure facilities such as Work shed, Developed Plots, Power, Water, Road and all other amenities.
